Clues About MLM Success Are Well Hidden In Plain Sight

Come on in. My wife is making homemade chili. Have a bowl and a crusty roll and enjoy. Let's talk a bit about how the really, really big dogs built their massive fortunes in MLM.

I was lucky enough to have a late night coffee with a former Crown Ambassador in Amway about 10 years ago. He was the #9 earner in the entire company a long time ago. It was a fascinating exchange. I'd ask a question, and he'd talk. I'd sip coffee and burn the concepts into my brain. For nearly 3 hours, until 2:00 in the morning.

I got a gold nugget from him that changed my entire paradigm of the industry in 1994. Until 2002. Then I forgot it. Then I remembered it again just the other day. So I remembered it for 8 years and forgot it for 3.

What was the secret?

The 20th person.

Huh?

You enjoying the chili? Good. Let me explain.

The true magic of MLM appears when a leg duplicates down 20 generations. Note those aren't stacked generations or caused by spillover. It is when a guy sponsors a gal who sponsors a guy who sponsors a couple etc. etc 20 times. Something magical occurs.

I quickly discovered that if I was constantly working with the deepest point of a line, everyone between the deepest point and me would get excited. I would scan my printout weekly, and phone the newest, deepest person. I'd visit with them and try to determine if they were ambitious. I'd then focus a few hours a week on helping them do presentations, 2on1's, 3 way calls, etc. depending on where they lived.

This created more depth and more excitement. And more volume. And bigger bonus checks.

I did this for about 3 years really, really well. The 3 legs I build from 1994 to 1997 still are growing today. Then I kind of forgot, sponsored without driving depth, and the 5 legs I built from 1998 to 2000 are kind of spindly and sick. And then from 2000 to 2004 the 250 legs I built are scrawny except for 1 that I went deep in.

In 10 years I got it right 4 times in total. I can introduce you to the 20th person in those lines and they are all healthy and growing. The lines where I sponsored, but never worked down to the 20th are all struggling or dead entirely.

Clear as mud?

I find it easier to draw out on a big poster board in the office. Use a pencil and track a line as it grows. Your job is to always be looking to build a relationship with the deepest point each week. Help them get one level deeper. And let everyone in between know so they get excited.

It sounds so simple. Maybe that's why it's a secret. The best secrets always hide in plain sight.
