Lotto millionaire Michael Carroll was banned from driving for three
years and fined just £975 as an “average earner” today because the court
had no record of his current bank balance.
King's Lynn magistrates dealt with the 23-year-old £9.7m jackpot winner
in his absence after he admitted a string of motoring offences through
his solicitor.
Speaking on his behalf, Neil Meachem said Carroll pleaded guilty to
driving without insurance on July 13, September 12, 13 and 21 last year,
and driving with a revoked licence on October 15.
Fifteen other similar offences were withdrawn.
Gwen Wallace, prosecuting, said Carroll was disqualified from driving in
July 2004, and had not applied for a new licence when he was caught
driving in October.
Mr Meachem said he was unsure Carroll, who is serving 9 months in prison
for affray, understood road traffic regulations.
“The best mitigation he has got is his guilty plea,” he said.
Chairman of the bench David Cooper-Groves said he had seen press reports
that claimed Carroll had little of his fortune left.
“I haven't read anything to that effect,” said Mr Meachem. “I understand
it's dwindled considerably but I can't give you figures.”
Sentencing Carroll, Mr Cooper-Groves said: “I don't know whether he's
got £5m, £2m or fifty quid - I haven't got a clue.
“I cannot guess his means, so I'm obliged to treat him as an average
earner in this county.”
Carroll was also ordered to pay £60 costs.
