£3.5m lotto win for 83-year-old

A great-grandfather who won a £3.5million lottery jackpot on his 83rd birthday vowed to day to make his great-grandchildren's dreams come true.

Widower Bob Bradley, 83, of Llanelli, South Wales, has no plans to spend a penny on himself and said he had never seen his own dreams come true during a long eventful life.

Now he intends to buy his 16-year-old great-grandson the farm he has always dreamed of and will also lavish riches on his 14-year-old great-granddaughter.

As a D-Day veteran, invalided out of the war after being injured in a mortar attack, he returned to Llanelli to spend his working life as a machine operator in a car parts plant.

The father of one retired 20 years ago and lost his wife after 59 years of marriage, at the age of 80, in 2004.

He insisted today that his greatest happiness, after winning a £3,570,063 share of Saturday's double rollover jackpot, will be to make his family's dreams come true.

Son Barry, 58, and his wife Yvonne, 53, and grandson Chris, 35, and his wife Geraldine, 32, were all at his side today to celebrate the unexpected win at the five star Morgan's Hotel, in Swansea.

"This win means my family will never have to worry about money," said a jubilant Mr Bradley today.

"I'll set them all up with what they want and just enjoy doing that. All I want is to have my family around me and see them enjoying themselves."

He added: "I'm going to spend it on my great-grandchildren and I will make their dreams come true."

He declined to give their names, saying that they would now have enough trouble with the notoriety they were bound to attract back at school.

But he added: "My dreams in life never came true so I will make their dreams come true.

"It is just bloody amazing how six numbers can change your life.

"It's too late for me but I can look after the next generation."

He said that he was alone on Saturday when he discovered he had scooped the lottery jackpot, even though it was his 83rd birthday.

He had stayed away from the local social club where he normally went on a Saturday, because he knew his birthday would be announced publicly.

When he realised he had the winning numbers four, nine, 13, 29, 31 and 36, for a ticket bought at a local branch of Woolworths, he called his son immediately.

But when his son proved to be out he left a message and spent an agitated evening alone, steadying his nerves with a few can of beer, and sleeping very little.

He added: "When I told him at 8am on Sunday morning, he had the surprise of his life.

"I already feel like I had won the jackpot before Saturday night - I've got good health and a wonderful family. No amount of money can buy that."
