WELCOME TO ILFORD..THE UK'S LUCKIEST TOWN FOR LOTTERY JACKPOT WINS

IF you want to improve your odds of a big Lottery win move to Ilford.

The Essex town is the UK's luckiest for jackpots, with nearby Romford second, figures showed yesterday.

Most millionaires - 1,800 in all - have been created in Birmingham.

But it does not make the luckiest top 10 towns and cities worked out by operator Camelot.

They got the figure by dividing population by the number of jackpot winners since the draw began.

Ilford has one winner per 8,019 people. In all, 29 have won the jackpot there, including a syndicate of 12 Thames Water staff who scooped £1,247,863.

Asked for the secret of Ilford's success, town centre manager Reg Woda said: "There's a degree of serenity here. People feel relaxed and don't mind a flutter. I think I'd better buy a ticket!"

Behind Romford - one winner per 9,809 - comes Enfield in North London, Perth in Scotland and Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Liverpool broke into the top 10 at seventh behind Watford - partly due to a £5million win in February by 14 Alliance and Leicester staff.

The top 10's total jackpot prize pot was £886million - with 330 winning entries and 182 millionaires.

With most millionaires created, it's no surprise most money has been paid out in Birmingham since 1994 when the draw began.

The total payout of prizes over £50,000 is £239,566,779. Newcastle comes second with £229,229,791, and Sheffield third with £180,060,036.

Camelot chief executive Dianne Thompson said: "Millionaires have been created in every UK postcode area, so it's fair to say there are lucky hotspots everywhere."
