Pensioner Gordon scoops £25,000 on the Postcode Lottery

http://www.sunderlandtoday.co.uk

PENSIONER Gordon Cleugh was celebrating in style last night after scooping £25,000 in the latest Postcode Lottery draw.
It was Sunderland's first win after lottery bosses selected the city for the third top prize giveaway.
Organisers spent the day knocking on doors across the SR4 postcode area, telling more than 200 excited players their number had finally come up.
Residents were then whisked by bus to Lumley Castle for a glittering ceremony, hosted by Metro Radio DJ Ingrid and pantomime star Danielle Nichols.
Each of the 222 guests was in with the chance of a guaranteed jackpot of £25,000, while the remaining 221 would be given £45 each.
But it was 68-year-old Gordon, from Southmayne Road, High Barnes, whose luck was in on the night after his six-digit postcode and unique three-digit ticket code matched the winning number.
Dad-of-three Gordon said: "It feels absolutely marvellous. I've never won anything before in my life, apart from the odd £10 on the National Lottery.

"I'm very, very pleased, if a little shocked. I just can't believe it.
"All I can say is that this is what it must feel like to be a winner at the Oscars and waiting for them to draw the winner is like waiting for them to open the golden envelope.
"It hasn't sunk in yet so I'm not sure what I'll spend the money on, but I think I'll get a new car.
"I'm off to Egypt on holiday, too, so I'll have a lot of extra spending money."
Gordon, who has played the lottery since its
JUBILANT: Lottery winner Gordon Cleugh.launch in June, said he was convinced there was a catch when organisers told him SR4 had been chosen.
The widower added: "They contacted me on Friday to say that everyone who'd bought a ticket in SR4 was in with a chance of winning.
"I fully expected to come here tonight and actually have to buy something, but instead I've walked away with something. It's fantastic.
"I can't believe how many times my picture has been taken.
"I've got a six-year-old grandson, Daniel, and I'm sure he's going to have a great Christmas this year."
Lottery promotions staff were plugging the game at The Bridges shopping centre all this week, urging Wearsiders to take part in the direct debit lottery, which donates 20 per cent of its profits to North East charities.
Ross Forbes, regional director of the Postcode Lottery, said: "We are absolutely thrilled that Gordon was tonight's winner. We also had our first ever winner, Mary Burnip, from Chester-le-Street, here to celebrate with us," he said.
"We sold more than 20,000 tickets for this month's draw so the Postcode Lottery is definitely catching on.
"We had 221 winners who received £45 each. Some of them had bought more than one ticket, too, which was great.
"Hopefully, next time round we'll have even more people signing up to take part."

Internationally, the Postcode Lottery operation has contributed more than £2 billion to charitable projects and organisations throughout the world.
This funding has enabled valuable work to be carried out in poverty-stricken areas and for the protection of nature and the environment.
GoodFund promotes the Postcode Lottery in the North East and distributes the group's profits on behalf of the Postcode Lottery.
